The VAT applicable to ornamental plants differs a lot depending on the European country we are talking about. In most of them, it is lower than that of most consumer goods, according to the latest data from several countries collected by the European Nursery Association (ENA) to which GuíaVerde has had access.

According to these data, Hungary is the country that applies the highest tax to plants, but also to other products, with 27% . Next are the Nordic countries . Sweden and Denmark place it at 25% and Finland at 24%, all of them equal to the rest of consumer goods.

Spain is situated, with 10% in line with countries such as France, Italy or Serbia . At the bottom, Belgium and Portugal or Germany stand out with 6% with 7%. It should be noted that in some countries the tax varies depending on the use or process that is given to the products. For example, in Germany if the plants are destined for a landscaping project it rises to 19%. Another example of these exceptions is Belgium where if the plant is used with another product for a composition it rises to 21%, a percentage also stipulated for seeds. Aromatic plants are not taxed in Ireland.
